Newcaise – New Artist Q&A

How did you first get involved in the Underground music scene?

Querijn: I think for me personally it was Monstercat. I was a dubstep fanboy I must say. After checking out all of the channel I found some Hardstyle tunes. Went checking out more & so my love for it became more & more. Somewhere between 2016 & 2017 I decided to search songs but couldn’t find any. So I went over to Liquid DnB since it was always my favorite second genre. So after finding tunes like Amaryllis – Hiver I started to love this genre even more then Hard style.

Jochem: I was browsing the internet one day. Found some Netsky tunes but wasn’t really familiar with the term “Drum & Bass.” After Querijn mentioned the genre we went checking it out together. He suggested some tunes & artists to follow and listen to.

What made you get into the producing side of things?

In 2014 I started producing Hardstyle with a few mates. Collaboration went shitty and soon he started producing on his own. Jochem came in touch with producing because of me about 3 years ago. He started with producing House/Dance. In the beginning of 2017 we decided to start a collaboration. But there was a small problem. Which genre were we’re going to produce. I didn’t want to produce Dance/House & Jochem didn’t want to produce Hardstyle. I came to the conclusion that Drum & Bass might be a suitable genre. So we decided that Drum & Bass was the genre we were going to produce.

What influences you when making music?

Nothing really. It really depends when we’re making music and if you feel creative or not. Sometimes a tune can influence but most of the time we don’t have any influences.

Can you tell us about your production process?

We mostly just start with chords. Doesn’t matter if it is for pads or piano. Then we’ll make the first drop then the intro and then work off the track till the outro. It also depends on the tune. Sometimes we will make the drums first and then come up with some chords or melody.

What makes drum & bass different from other genres?

Querijn: The atmospheric sounds together with some rolling drums and it’s tempo. Other genres don’t seem to create the same feeling I have when I listen to Liquid DnB. On the otherhand. Drum & Bass has a full spectrum of styles. Even within Liquid only. From jazzy vibes to chilled down vibes. Then you have Neurofunk ,Jump up and Jungle of course. These styles are lovely & sick in their own way.

Jochem: Just as Querijn mentioned Drum & Bass has a wide spectrum of variety & styles. Even though we mostly like Liquid we can also enjoy listening to some Neuro. The vibe some tunes have is incredible and I hope we can achieve the same feeling with some people with our music. I also get some sort of motivation boost when listening to Drum & Bass tunes. Don’t know why though haha.

Who are your favourite Producers/Dj’s?

Querijn: Producers – S.P.Y, Monrroe, Pola & Bryson, Malaky, Changing Faces, Liz-E & Seba. Dj;s – Changing Faces, Silence Groove, Command Strange, Monrroe & Satl

Jochem: Producers – Keeno, Netsky, Hybrid Minds & Monrroe. Dj’s Keeno, Netsky & Hybrid Minds.

How do you feel about the Drum & Bass scene today?

We think it’s still a very good community and that’s a miracle because of its size. A genre with a huge audience is most likely to fall apart and become normal without this community feeling. Also it is good that young producers get a lot of opportunities even when they are very very small. A lot of producers want to have a chat with you and maybe even collaborate with you if they like your music. Even though they have 3k followers on Soundcloud and you just haven’t even reached 100 yet. We’re happy to be a part of this community because it means the coming 10 to 15 years will be great with a lot of releases & gigs.

Do you have any advice for other up & coming producers & Dj’s?

Produce tunes you like. Don’t follow a specific style because it gives you fame! Also deliver a wide spectrum of tunes. Do not hold on to the same elements over and over again. It will get boring overtime. But if you want to improve your sounds you could always contact more experienced DnB producers. Or search for forums with a production section where you can ask feedback. We learned a lot from these things. Also watch a lot of masterclasses and tutorials.

What has been the most memorable time since your involvement in the scene?

The moment we heard that we were going to have a release. For me personally (Querijn) it felt like a dream coming true. I wanted to achieve this goal since I was 12 years old. Although it was a bit fame based back then.

What are your future plans on Default Recordings?

I guess we will release many more tunes on the label. And maybe even make it bigger if we have a recognizable name haha. But for now we are still small you can expect to have most of our releases on Default Recordings 🙂
