Cat Knight Interview

How did you first get involved in the Underground music scene?

Well it all started for me when I fell in love with the wicked flyers way back in the day about 1989 when I was at school, I was so intrigued I had to find out more. I purchased a ‘Fantasia’ tape pack then went out to my first all-nighter called “CREAM/DESTINY” @ Oscars on Clacton pier the rest is history, I was hooked!

What made you get into the producing/Song writing side of things?

In 1998 I formed my own band (formerly known as Blakey’s Girls & Urban Grace) where I discovered my love for song writing/vocal and harmony arrangement and we were signed by Universal-Island Records.

What influences you when singing/making music?

Many things influence me, it’s what the music tells me, the way I’m feeling, my emotions and experience’s recent, past and present. Some of the artist’s that have influenced me are:-

Funky Lox, Shakka Chan, Anita Baker, Erma Franklin, Aliyah, Kate Pierson, Rozalla, Alison Limerick, Eva Cassidy, Teena Marie, Kathy Brown, Natalie Williams, Deborah Anderson, Denise Gordon, Shirley Basey, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Loleatta Holloway, Canzetta Maria Station, Shara Nelson, Candi Staton, Sarah McLachlan, Black Box, Soul 2 Soul, Destinys Child, Pink, Rachel Wallace, Escape, Boys2men, TLC, Envogue, SWV, Gwen Stefani, Shakira, Peter Bouncer, Mc Conrad, Lasgo, Prince, Kelis, Neneh Cherry,

These people have inspired me to make the music I produce today but there are sooooooo many more.

Can you tell us about your song writing process?

Normally producers send me their production to write to, it’s nice when they send a few little idea’s first, then I can say what material I’m feeling the most so to get the best track possible. Sometimes they like to build the track around the vocal, which is also great as i have so many ideas that i havent used yet, but i have to say its harder work for the producer as they have to make sure the production is in the same key as the vocals, this can be tricky.

What makes drum & bass different from other genres?

Drum & Bass is different than any other kind of music. It goes deeper with the of use heavy deep base lines and the high energy rolling beats, coupled with atmospheric strings can make the music soooooo uplifting and powerful. I love it.

Who are your favourite Producers?

This is a hard one as there are so many around. Some I like include Matrix & Futurebound, Muffler, DC Breaks, Metrix, Hamilton, Klute, Laos, Alexx Rave, Baseline Smith, The Prototypes, Concord Dawn, Johnny L, Camo & Krooked, Lenzman,  Badmarsh, Dj Marky & Spy, Netsky, J Majik & Wickaman, Feint, Seba, Artificial Intelligence, Nao, Nu Tone, B Furney, D Kay, John B, Nero, Loadstar, Dj Spice, High Contrast, Brooks Brothers, Ramdom Movement, D Star, Subsonik, Teebee, Phetsta, Shockone, Bad Company, and many many MANY more! That’s only DnB lol.  There’s so much talent around and the new talent thats now coming through is really exciting. The prospect of working with new and existing producers and evolving the genre further give’s me a huge rush.

Who are your favourite DJ’s?

Dj Flapjack, FunkyLox, Miss C, Dr Rave, Hels Bels, Lady P and there’s way too many to mention, mix it up man! Meh!

How do you feel about the Drum & Bass scene today?

I love the way drum and bass is evolving mixing and blending different genres.  The only thing is that I wish there were more party’s where they played deep melodic rolling liquid style DnB, that had live musician’s and vocalist’s that go with the flow and have it large.

Do you have any advice for other up & coming song writers/Vocalists?

My advice would be to all Song Writers/Vocalists/Producers to join MCPS/PRS soon as you have released a tune “it’s a must”………… You register your songs, your percentages etc with them and they collect royalties/publishing on your behalf .

What has been the most memorable time since your involvement in the scene?

Oh my god these questions are hardcore………. when I look back over HOW MANY YEARS?????? there have been sooooo many memorable times.  The one that sticks out in my mind the most is when I was at a heavy party and suddenly it all kicked off everyone was having it and I realised they were playing my track! Buzzzzzin  🙂

What are your future plans on Default Recordings?

Gonna make some banging tuneage with top talented people that will blow you away moving left foot right foot forward……….
