Comma – New Artist Q&A

How did you first get involved in the Underground music scene?

Throughout high school I always had a large interest in drum and bass, but being too young to attend actual events, me and my friends would arrange parties in different venues around our local town. These would often get shutdown by the police by it gave me an insight into drum and bass and the rave scene. Once I turned 18 I started attending actual events and festivals.

What made you get into the producing side of things?

I guess what first inspired me was listening to the UKF dubstep tutorial song on the UKF dubstep channel when I was about 14 and was fooled into thinking producing was as easy as the song made it out to be. I think it’s safe to say I was wrong. From then on I’ve always had a copy of FL on my computer.

What influences you when making music?

I’m a big fan of loads of different genres apart from drum and bass. I experiment with loads of different sounds and I try to get inspiration from these different styles when producing my tracks. I guess my style is currently a melting pot of minimal drum and bass and jump up, taking different elements from each. I also tend to try and make music that is similar to what I listen to in the car so it changes quite often.

Can you tell us about your production process?

Most of the time I will start with either a drum pattern or sample that I want to work with. From here I will usually load up a vst (either Serum or Massive) and make the dirtiest synth possible and work from there. I usually go back to a track multiple times changing or adding things before I finally think it’s done.

What makes drum & bass different from other genres?

The versatility of it. I would consider myself quite young in the spectrum of producers out there, and the fact that my dad was listening to jungle and drum and bass when he was younger and now I produce it just shows that so far it has stood up to the test of time and evolving with each generation.

Who are your favourite Producers/Dj’s?

Right now I’m loving Skeptical, Nausika, Alix Perez and Kahn and Neek on the producing side. DJ wise I would have to say Skeptical and Alix Perez along with Chimpo, Serum, Calibre and Lenzman.

How do you feel about the Drum & Bass scene today?

I think it’s great; there are loads of events going on up and down the country. It also has a heavy interest with the youth of today which ensures that it won’t be going anywhere quick.

Do you have any advice for other up & coming producers & Dj’s?

Yesterday you said tomorrow. You don’t get it by wishing. Basically just listen to one of Nike’s ads.

What has been the most memorable time since your involvement in the scene?

Driving to Croatia for Outlook for sure.

What are your future plans on Default Recordings?

I’m constantly producing and I have a few that are ready for release so keep your eyes peeled.
