Effekttz – New Artist Q&A

How did you first get involved in the Underground music scene?

Got my first set of decks in 97′,Soundlab DLP1600’S . I spent every spare minute on them , up to 16 hrs a day sometimes. I started buying my vinyl from Vibe Records where i met some quality producers & dj’s like Coolhand Flex and Alibi . Done a few dj competitions early on . I had a residency at a night called Point Blank that Swan-E headlined at the end of 97′. The next year i was playing alongside Kenny Ken , Brockie , Marley Marl , A-Sides and Mampi Swift at an event called STEPPERS . Other events included Alpha Project where i played alongside Randall also Deadly Fusion playing alongside Twisted Individual . All the while mixing on several internet radio stations like www.Planetdnb.com , Bassbinterrorists , www.globaldnb.com ( every saturday 8pm – 10pm GMT ) and www.brainsmudge.com ( every wednesday 9pm-10pm GMT ). I have had the odd guest slot with Flapjack on dnbradio.com also i have done a few Pirate radio stations one being RudeFM back in 2002.

What made you get into the producing side of things?

Going to Vibe Records and Streetsounds to buy vinyl and meeting producers, watching them work got me intrigued and the thought of playing my own tracks to an audience swung it for me.

What influences you when making music?

My influences vary really from hearing new released tracks or just flicking through a new sample pack. I get up every day and all i think about is making beats so i don’t need no help in starting a track. Still got the love even after 19 years.

Can you tell us about your production process?

I like to start off with a strong kick and snare and then root through the sample packs and find a string maybe, from there i am already making the track in my head trying to find samples to fit the bill.

What makes drum & bass different from other genres?

Drum & Bass is always changing. It’s fast paced and needs to be kept up with itself. It’s versatile and there are many styles to choose from.

Who are your favourite Producers/Dj’s?

I dont really have a favorite producer as such. The likes of A-Sides, Saxxon, Randall, Jaybee, Pixel, Vapour, The Invaders, Serum and Ed-Rush & Optical are a few but the list could go on. As for Djs again my list could go on and on but Kenny Ken , Hype , Randall , Coolhand Flex are probably the top few i listen to the most.

How do you feel about the Drum & Bass scene today?

Like i said before the fast paced and versatility of Drum & Bass make it very interesting. The varying styles are making it appealing to a wider age group bringing alot more people to the scene. I’m enjoying being a small part of a big thing. It’s a good time to be involved.

Do you have any advice for other up & coming producers & Dj’s?

Don’t stop doing what you love. Ignore the haters and do your thing, Your time will come.

What has been the most memorable time since your involvement in the scene?

Luckily for me i have several highlights. One is looking up from the decks while playing a Hokey Cokey Bootleg i made and watching a whole venue full of people actually doing the Hokey Cokey all arm in arm then having to reload it a few times so they could do it all again. Also mixing alongside some of the biggest names in the scene including people who i had listened to from a young age. Loving certain tunes and growing up to be friends with the very people that made those tunes.

What are your future plans on Default Recordings?

I have a couple of little gems awaiting release in the future but apart from that i am on it every day so be seeing you soon. Big-Up’s
